How a Mosquito Operates (1912, Windsor McCay)
Beat the little buggers at their own game this summer by watching this delightful rendering of how a mosquito does its job. Featuring a top hat-wearing mosquito who gets a little more than he bargained for, this is a classic cartoon from the brilliant mind of Windsor McCay ("Gertie the Dinosaur," "The Sinking of the Lusitania").

Down to the Sea in Ships (1922, Hodkinson)
The legendary Clara Bow makes her screen debut in this tale of the Massachusetts whaling industry, years before she became the "It Girl" that we know and love so well. Cool off today with Clara, William Walcott, Marguerite Courtot, and Raymond McKee as they brave the high seas at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum today.

The Great Nickelodeon Show

Vogue Theatre

See what movies were like when they were shown with live vaudeville acts, lavishly illustrated songs, novelty lectures, and – in this case – musical accompaniment and  a piano solo by the extraordinary  Frederick Hodges.   “The Great Nickelodeon Show” returns to San Francisco after performances at Telluride, the Pordenone Silent Film Festival, Los Angeles, the Castro, and beyond.  But this is an all-new production with new films – most of them hand-colored – and new songs.

Reed Rahlman returns as Prof. Blockhead, with new feats of magic; Lori Leigh Gieleghem and Sean Sharp have new songs, and Greg Tiede will startle with the dramatic tale of Pres. McKinley’s assassination and the electrocution of his assassin under the spell of the notorious Emma Goldman.   Films will include rarely seen gems from Georges Méliès, Edwin S. Porter and D.W. Griffith.  Return to a time when audiences were expected to participate, and talking back to the movies was not a crime.
