Duets With Alex Hassan One of the many highlights of the WestCoast Ragtime Festival for me was performing piano duets with my good friend and colleague Alex Hassan. The set was held on Friday,November 16 2007. Videograher Tom Warner captured us performing some authentic vintage European piano duet music that Alex rediscovered. Sunshine Capers This is my rendition of Roy Bargy's wonderful 1922 Novelty piano solo "Sunshine Capers," which has the distinction of being one of the few Novelty solos from this era published in the unusual key of A major. Cole Porter Medley Sometimes, we pianists just noddle around without any direction. So it was with me when in an unguarded and unprepared moment, I found myself toying with some themes from a few well-known songs by Cole Porter. The tunes are: What Is This Thing Called Love? Johnson made many recordings of this wonderful piece throughout his career. The first recording was a piano roll made for the Artempo Company in 1918 (Artempo 12975 / February 1918). I am playing the second version, based on Johnson's 1921 QRS player piano roll (QRS 100999). This performance was recorded live at the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival,in the American Exchange Hotel, Saturday August 11, 2007.
